As I finish my coverage of educational apps for Android devices, today?s post is specifically for high schoolers preparing on taking the SAT or ACT exams. When taking these exams, practice is important. There are a large number of practice-related apps on the market and some cost quite a bit. I would recommend trying the free options available before investing in any of the expensive apps.
This is one of at least four different apps from Ivy Standard, a test preparation site. The other apps they have cover math, English, and writing. This is a free version of the app, but you can purchase the full version, which has over 150 more words and removes ads.
Vocabulary is very important in studying for the SAT. This app shows you a word and provides four possible answers to its definition. It is just you and the vocab term, so no timer or fancy graphics. The app keeps track of your streak (good or bad), and displays tips and tricks, such as providing info on the root meaning of words. Overall, this is a very helpful vocabulary app.
This app is designed to help students improve problem-solving skill by focusing on logical reasoning. It is a free app supported with ads. There is a paid version of the app, which appears costs $2.99 and removes all in-app ads. The app has 10 categories of questions you can choose from: Number Series, Essential Part, Matching Definitions, Logical Problems, Statement and Assumption, Theme Detection, Letter and Symbol Series, Analogies, Making Judgments, and Logical Games.
When you start the app you can decide how many categories you want to work on. When you begin you will have a question to read and then four answers from which to choose. The app does not allow you to choose an answer so when you figure it out, hit the show answer button and see how it compares to yours. In addition to the answer, there is a short explanation. The app will also allow you to share the question with friends.
This app takes a different approach to helping students learn vocabulary. Instead of trying to cram, this app is designed to work on one word a day over a lengthier period of time. This is a free app that is supported by a small banner ad, and I couldn?t find any way to remove the ads. The app has some nice features, and I would recommend using them to get the maximum benefit. You can set up the app to give you notifications of the arrival of new words and the daily word. Another neat option is that you can have the app pronounce the word to you.
Opening the app, you will be presented with the word, its definition, and an audio button. Confident students can easily hide and then guess the definition. You can favorite any word and then access it along with your other favorites from the bottom menu button. In addition to the daily word, you can find a random word(s). A fun feature of the app is that you can share the word as a challenge to your friends.
As with the previous app, this app is set up to do a little bit of work each day. This is the free version of the app which has over 5000 SAT vocabulary words and over 150 SAT math problems. The pro version has over 7000 SAT words, over 250 SAT math problems, and over 250 SAT Sentence Completion Problems.
When you open the app, you see three types of questions. For vocabulary questions, you will need to choose the correct definition and for math problems, choose the correct solution. For the SAT question, you will need to complete the sentence with the correct word. There is an explanation to the answer if needed. The app is set up for daily testing, but you can also pull up the last five days of questions. You can also pull up a random word or math problem, too.
Preparing for the SAT or ACT is very important for those students hoping to attend a good college. These apps should help those students with math, vocabulary, and general logic problems.
