The sheltered communities of the Amish and Mennonites are mysteries to most Americans -- but that goes both ways: Most Americans live lives that are utterly bewildering to members of those communities. So when five Amish and Mennonites youths decided to see what the rest of the world was like, TLC sent cameras to follow them around, an experience that will be chronicled in TLC's "Breaking Amish."
"I pretty much freaked out, because I like being outside," said Sabrina, one of the five filmed for the show, who joined Kate, another young woman featured in the series, on TODAY Friday. "You basically give up everything to find out what's out there. It's hard."
Kate acknowledged: "My first reaction was, like, it's so loud." And one of her subsequent reactions -- to drink and drive -- got her arrested for DUI. "It was just a really bad decision and a huge mistake," she said. "Just me being stupid and not thinking things clearly."
So after the experience is over, did the young folks head back to their communities? The ladies would not say, though they did show up wearing traditional clothes on TODAY.
Check out what else Abe, Kate, Rebecca, Jeremiah and Sabrina get into on "Breaking Amish" on TLC, Sunday night at 9 p.m.?
