The UBC Okanagan Heat women's squad were all business Sunday afternoon against the Douglas College Royals as the Heat were victorious 3-0 at the Nonis Sports Field.

Defending their home turf in commanding fashion, the Heat notched their first win of the PACWEST regular season and moved their record to one win and one loss after the first weekend of league play.

"We played stronger today," noted Heat coach Claire Paterson. "We played to our strengths a bit more. We moved the ball around to feet, which helped us be successful."

Second year forward Kirsten Dodds (Vernon, BC) opened the scoring for the Heat in the 31st minute off of a scramble in front of the Royals net, nicking the ball past the Royals keeper to give the Heat a 1-0 lead.

The Heat midfield created a lot of excellent scoring opportunities, most notably from the boot of freshman Alana Hazell (Midfield, Kelowna, BC). Hazell had a scoring opportunity herself with a powerful shot on goal just before halftime, but it was denied by a great diving save from second year goalkeeper Ashley Dunn (Maple Ridge, BC).

Further offensive pressure from the Heat in the second half generated a pair of goals. The first was scored by Lana Finley (2nd year, Forward, Kelowna, BC) off of a beautiful cross from sophomore Kirsten Dodds (Forward, Vernon, BC), and the second was nicely chipped in by freshman Taylor Candelario (Forward, Honolulu, HI) from outside of the 18 yard box.

"We had some great performances from our first year players," added Paterson. "Alana Hazell did fantastic for us in the middle of the field, and Taylor Candelario did well when she got in, ripping a fantastic shot for the second goal. We had some good spark with those younger players."

The Heat hit the road to take on Langara College next Saturday, while the winless Royals (0-2-0) take on the Capilano Blues.

The UBC Okanagan Heat will be back on their home pitch, the Nonis Sports Field, Sunday September 30 at 1:00 p.m. when they host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack in a rematch of last year?s provincial final.

HEAT NOTES:?Christine Tallon, a third year keeper from Kamloops who had previously played for the University of Alberta Pandas, played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Heat to earn the win and the shutout.
