Cabrera ties Hamilton in HRs; Tigers beat Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Miguel Cabrera's line drive home run in the eighth inning against Minnesota moved him into a tie with Texas star Josh Hamilton for the AL lead, bringing the first triple crown since 1967 that much closer to reality.

The blast may have been even bigger for Detroit's playoff chances.

Cabrera's home run gave the Tigers a five-run cushion they would end up needing and Justin Verlander struck out eight in seven innings in a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday that gave them a two-game lead in the AL Central.

Cabrera's blast in the eighth inning off Casey Fien was his 43rd home run for the year. He also leads the AL in batting average (.327) and RBIs (136) as he looks to become the first player since 1967 to lead the league in all three categories.

"It's unbelievable what he's done this year," said Verlander, the reigning AL MVP who was wearing a dark blue t-shirt with the message "Keep the MVP in the D" and Cabrera's name on the front. "It's amazing to me how he keeps getting better. He's already the best hitter in the game and he keeps taking it to another level."

Verlander (17-8) allowed four hits and one unearned run to drop his ERA to 2.64 for the Tigers, who had to sweat out another close one.

Cabrera's homer proved to be a big one after Ryan Doumit hit a grand slam off of Joaquin Benoit in the eighth.

Al Alburquerque helped the Detroit bullpen do what it couldn't do against the lowly Twins on Friday night ? finish the game. Jose Valverde picked up his 33rd save. Prince Fielder and Andy Dirks also went deep for Detroit.

Chicago lost to Tampa Bay 10-4 moments before the final out of the Tigers game.

"I want to talk about the team," Cabrera said respectfully. "There's too many distractions right now and been talking too much about triple crowns. I pull too much attention. I don't want to do that. I want to go out there and play my game."

P.J. Walters (2-5) gave up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in five innings for the Twins. Joe Mauer went 0 for 3 with two walks, dropping his average to .320.

One day after Detroit lost a game of cushion to the White Sox when reliever Brayan Villarreal couldn't find the plate in the eighth inning of a 4-2 loss to the lowly Twins, Verlander came out determined to make sure the Tigers kept the pressure on Chicago.

"That was a huge game for us," manager Jim Leyland said. "You look at the scoreboard and see the White Sox most likely are going to lose. That's a game you've got to win."

With a free and easy delivery, the right-hander kept his fastball at 93 or 94 mph while keeping the Twins off balance with an array of off-speed pitches. He started to ramp things up in the fourth when he blew Justin Morneau away with consecutive fastballs of 98 and 99 and hit 100 later in the inning.

It wasn't just Verlander's dazzling stuff that gave the Twins hitters problems. The afternoon shadows at Target Field make it very difficult for hitters to pick up the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand and often contributes to slow days for the offense.

That appeared to be the case early for Cabrera as well, who was befuddled by Walters. The slugger struck out in his first two at-bats and flew out to right in his third. Cabrera entered the day leading Mauer by five points in the batting race, Hamilton by eight in the RBI race, but trailing Hamilton by one in homers.

So will he be watching Hamilton down the stretch?

"I'll let you guys keep Hamilton in your eyes," Cabrera said. "I'll go to the hotel and get some breakfast tomorrow and try to win tomorrow."

The bigger prize, of course, is the division title. Neither the Tigers nor the Sox will qualify for one of two wild cards in the American League, so their only way in is through the division door.

"The last couple weeks, there's too much attention right now," Cabrera said of the triple crown. "I don't like too much of that stuff. But it's always good. You've got to feel comfortable with that. You've got to feel positive and be ready to play."

NOTES: Verlander left with nobody out in the eighth after Denard Span reached on an error, marking just the fourth time all season he's been taken out in the middle of an inning. ... One night after making a costly error late in a 4-2 loss to the Twins, Fielder was sharp at 1B, making a quick decision on a hot grounder from Jamey Carroll in the fifth. Fielder threw to third base and Cabrera chased Trevor Plouffe down to get the lead runner. ... Plouffe snapped an 0-for-18 skid with a double in the fifth inning. ... The Tigers will send RHP Anibal Sanchez (4-6, 3.95) to the mound for the series finale against Twins RHP Liam Hendriks (1-8, 6.09). Sanchez is coming off of his first shutout in more than a year, a three-hitter against Kansas City that put the Tigers into a tie for first place.

Garage Organization the Right Way (Day 29: 30 Days to an ...

The garage is one area of the home that notorious for collecting lots of junk.? And, in collecting all of that junk, it becomes increasingly more disorganized.? With all of the DIY projects we do around this house, we?ve accumulated a ton of tools that all need to be stored.? And on top of the array of tools, we also have bikes, golf clubs, holiday d?cor, and more!? And, all of it has to be stored in the garage since we don?t have a basement, nor easy attic access.

Garage Organization Ideas

Garage organization can be a real challenge, but it doesn?t have to be.? Organizing a garage is the same as any other space, so keep these things in mind:

  1. What items do you use most frequently?
  2. Are there any items that you don?t use or don?t need?
  3. Can you group any items into kits?
  4. If it?s a multi-use item (like tape), can you group it with other like items in a drawer or container?

Those simple concepts should help you sort the majority of items in your garage.? Once things are sorted, you need to think about what is the best way for you to store the items you own, in the space you have.? We have a mixture of open shelving, an oversized work bench, and cabinets we?ve built to help us contain what we?ve got (tutorials coming soon).? Keep in mind, that while cabinets are nice because you can close the doors, they may not be the best solution for everyone.? Being able to see what you have is sometimes best.

To help inspire you (and us) a bit more, I?ve pulled some of my favorite garage organization ideas from around the web!? So, here we go?

This is one of my favorite garage inspiration pictures! The use of baskets and wall storage gets everything up off the floor, while still keeping everything visible on the walls!

?

Similar to the first picture above, this system accomplishes the same goals: getting all the items up off the floor while keeping everything visible and accessible!

?

As a kid who grew up playing sports, we always had a ton of different balls floating around our garage! I wish I knew about this cheap and simple solution back then! Since we?re planning to put our future kiddos in sports, we?ll definitely be adding one of these to our garage!

?

This mix of hooks, open shelving, and cabinets provides the perfect combination of storage solutions! All while keeping everything up of the ground!

?

This sky-high storage solution is perfect for long-term storage, like holiday decor and children?s keepsakes.

?

Lastly, this is not your typical garage. This is a garage that has been made into multipurpose space thanks to Lowe?s Creative Ideas Magazine! I seriously love this magazine- all of the ideas are affordable, useful, and creative! This garage can function as both a workspace and party place? doesn?t get better than that, especially when you don?t have a lot of entertaining space in your home!

?

So, what are the most important take-aways?

  1. Get everything UP off the ground, that is possible
  2. Use a combination of open shelving, cabinets, and workbenches to meet your needs
  3. Labeling things makes it easier to find what you need when you need it!
  4. Storage solutions don?t have to be expensive!? Use what you?ve got and build what you don?t have!

WHAT STORAGE SOLUTIONS DO YOU UTILIZE IN YOUR GARAGE?? WHAT?S YOUR FAVORITE LOOK?

Natural Weight Loss Supplements: Which SupplementWorks Best?

Reducing weight can noticeably make better your emotional and physical health, but it can be a slow process, adopting for a variety of products that claim to reduce appetite, prevent fat absorption, or enhance metabolism.
At present, many weight loss experts do not allow many products promoted as weight loss supplements because of a lack of proof. Also many diet supplements, including ephedra (herbal medicine used in asthma), which can cause heart attack and stroke.

Though, some proven natural weight loss supplements are alsoin the market. Here the question is that which supplements used for weight loss may be more secure and helpful while implementing a complete diet plan?
Here are some elements which can be used as weight loss essentials and which are proven to be helpful:

a) Green Tea Extract
b) Calcium
c) Conjugated Linoleic Acid
d) Fiber
e) Meal Substitute
f) Orlistat,

Here is one thing to remember, of course, that we should always consultyour doctor before taking any sort of supplement. Becausetaking supplements can have different side effects and may obstruct with medications we take. And, when we consider the consequences to weight loss, results that appear quickly are not secure and usually it is said that there are no quick fixes in weight loss. Regular exercise and a healthy diet plan is the key for the foundation of any successful weight loss program.

It is usually considered that calcium is the basic element for bone health. First thing that generally comes to mind is that people that takes more calcium are more strong, tall but there are many other benefits and one of them is weight loss. Calcium helps us to reduce our body weight more quickly.

However, ?there have been several studies that have shown benefits from three daily servings of low-fat dairy foods, including weight loss,? says Toby Smithson, RD, national spokesman for the American Dietetic Association. Those studies ?showed more weight loss from low-fat dairy foods combined with a reduced-calorie diet than from calcium supplements,? Smithson notes.
Calcium is one of the best weight loss supplements which help to boost your weight loss results. In a recent study, it was discovered by some researchers that some dieting women who received 1,000 mg of calcium supplements on daily basis on the average lost more weight and more body fat than women taking another weight loss product placebo. Though the differences recorded between the two in terms of weight and fat was very little but still it describes the relationship between weight loss and between calcium supplements.

Due to conflicting results between calcium and weight loss in different studies, it is expected that there might be more research on this subject later.Different researchers that worked on this topic and have found some missing links between calcium and weight loss theorize that nutritive calcium might help and play a vital role in the breakdown and storage of fat. Furthermore, the weight loss that has sometimes been noticed in few people who eat dairy products may have something to do with specific dairy proteins and magnesium, another important mineral abundant in dairy products. But so far, these hypotheses are unproven.

Woman Protects Cat From Husband By, er, Shooting Him | Babble ...

audreymiller 300x265 Woman Protects Cat From Husband By, er, Shooting HimApparently, Audrey Miller (pictured) was arguing with her husband when he threatened to shoot one of her beloved cats with a pellet gun.

Her response? She shot him in the stomach instead.

This all happened in Harris County, Texas. Luckily, the husband is currently in stable condition after surviving the surgery to repair the damage the .40 caliber handgun did to him.

Now, I don?t condone shooting most of the time. But I also don?t condone threatening pets with violence. After all, they are smaller than we are and trust us to take care of them.

Still, I don?t condone the shooting. Really.

Catalysis: Optimizing water splitting

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Computer simulations of a metal-sulfide alloy unlock the secrets to designing solar-powered catalysts that generate hydrogen fuel from water.

Partnerships can pay off when it comes to converting solar into chemical energy. By modeling a cadmium sulfide (CdS)-zinc sulfide (ZnS) alloy with special computational techniques, a Singapore-based research team has identified the key photocatalytic properties that enable this chemical duo to 'split' water molecules into a fuel, hydrogen gas (H2). The theoretical study was published by Jianwei Zheng from the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing and his co-workers.

Chemists had already identified CdS and ZnS semiconductors as promising photocatalysts for water splitting. However, both came with a drawback related to the size of their so-called 'band gap' -- the energy difference between occupied and unoccupied electronic states that determine photo-activity. While CdS can readily harvest solar energy because of its small band gap, it needs a metal co-catalyst to produce H2. On the other hand, ZnS requires high-energy ultraviolet light to initiate water splitting owing to its large band gap.

Recently chemists had overcome these problems by alloying CdS and ZnS together into a 'solid solution': a physical state where Zn ions are distributed homogenously inside the crystal lattice of CdS. Altering the proportion of ZnS in these alloys enables production of photocatalysts with tunable responses to visible light and high H2 evolution rates in water. Improving the design of a Cd-ZnS solid solution is difficult, because its underlying mechanism is poorly understood.

As a workaround, Zheng and his co-workers used a technique known as 'special quasi-random structures' (SQS) to mimic a completely random alloy with a series of small, periodic models. After carefully working to correlate experimental random hexagonal crystals with their SQS approximations, they calculated the electronic properties of the Cd-ZnS solid solution using hybrid density functional theory -- a computational method that gives accurate descriptions of band gaps.

When the researchers gradually increased the Zn content of their model alloy, they saw that the band gap deviated from a linear combination of the two components. This effect, known as band 'bowing', arises from volume deformations within the Cd-ZnS solid solution and is an essential parameter for predicting catalytic solar H2 production.

Further calculations revealed that the alloy's high catalytic activity stemmed from obvious elevation of the position of unoccupied electronic states, and a subtle change in the position of occupied electronic states, as the amount of Zn increased. But to retain strong light harvesting capabilities and to avoid premature corrosion, the team proposes an equal ratio of ZnS to CdS for optimal photocatalytic water splitting.

How To Lose A Negotiation W... - Business Insider

In a business interaction, if you notice that your companion is trying to give you a handshake with their palm facing downwards, you should immediately strategize on how to get out of this.?

Why??

Because a?handshake is supposed to be a greeting gesture that symbolizes both parties are on equal grounds, yet allowing your palm to face upward while your companion's palm is facing downward is basically allowing them to have the upper-hand, meaning they are now in control and you are not.

This is a bad move during negotiations.

The vibe between the two of you have already been established with that first handshake and everything you say from this moment forward will always have the "lower-hand" to their "upper-hand," especially if they were trying to intimidate you with this handshake.?

"[It] is the most aggressive of all handshakes because it gives the receiver little chance of establishing an equal relationship," according to Westside Toastmasters, a non-profit organization aimed at helping people?improve their public speaking and leadership skills.

Toastmasters shared three techniques on getting out of these overbearing handshakes:

1. The Step-to-the-Right Technique.

Basically, if you're right-footed ("The natural position for 90 percent of people when shaking with the right hand), you'll have more of an advantage when you step into the handshake with your left foot, and vice versa.

When someone extends their hand for a dominant handshake, you can prevent this interaction from happening by first stepping forward with your left foot.

?

Next, step forward with your right leg and into the other person's personal space. You can then cross your left leg across your right leg (Although, we've tried this and it's a little awkward).?

"This tactic allows you to straighten the handshake or even turn it over into the submissive position. It feels as if you're walking across in front of him and is the equivalent of winning an arm-wrestling bout. It also allows you to take control by invading his personal space."

2.?The Hand-on-Top Technique.

As you're going in for the dominating handshake, respond with your palms up at first; then, place your other hand ? the left one ? over your companion's hand to form a "Double-Hander" and simply straighten the handshake to a more equal position.

This technique is easier for women to use.?

3. The Last Resort Technique.?

If all else fails, and you feel as though your companion is trying to intimidate you, grab their hand from the top and shake it. But only do this as a last resort since it can shock the other person and is a very obvious maneuver.?

New Zealand Prime Minister Apologizes To Kim Dotcom As Megaupload Nears Relaunch

3dea73f8c0ea11e1aebc1231381b647a_7"Headlines from Britain to Malaysia, France to China, Germany to Brazil, Australia to the US. An apology can go a long way," said Kim Dotcom in a recent tweet. It's true. This comes after the New Zealand Prime Minister John Key issued a rather frank apology to the internet mogul saying, "I apologize to Mr Dotcom. I apologize to New Zealanders because every New Zealander... is entitled to be protected from the law when it comes to the GCSB, and we failed to provide that appropriate protection for him." PM John Key is of course referring to the spying conducted by the New Zealand government which lead to the dramatic take-down of Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom. As it turns out, members of the New Zealand government conducted the invasive investigation under the pretense Dotcom was a foreign nationalist when in fact he had acquired residency status, thus affording him the rights of the country.

Qatari leader: Arab nations should intervene in Syria

EPA

A column of smoke rises over Damascus, Syria, on Wednesday after two bomb blasts were reported.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

UNITED NATIONS -- Arab nations should intervene in Syria given the U.N. Security Council's failure to stop the civil war in the country, Qatari Emir Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani said Tuesday.

"The Security Council failed to reach an effective position. In view of this, I think that it is better for the Arab countries themselves to interfere out of their national, humanitarian, political and military duties and do what is necessary to stop the bloodshed in Syria," Sheik Hamad, speaking through an interpreter, said in a U.N. General Assembly speech.

Western powers have made clear they are opposed to direct intervention and the Security Council will not sanction action against the wishes of Russia and China. President Barack Obama on Tuesday?called again for the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Assad?but provided no clear direction forward.

The Syrian conflict grinds on. Cities are under attack leaving them crushed by heavy shelling. NBC's Bill Neely reports.

Sheik Hamad suggested that bypassing the U.N. Security Council would enable a peaceful transition of power in Syria.

"We had a similar precedent when Arab forces intervened in Lebanon in the mid-'70s ... to stop internal fighting there in a step that proved to be effective and useful," he added.

Sheik Hamad further urged all countries that believe in the cause of the Syrian people to provide "all sorts of support" to Syrians until they gain legitimate rights.

Activists say that 27,000 people have been killed in Syria's uprising, which began as peaceful demonstrations for reform 18 months ago but turned into an armed insurgency fighting to topple Assad, with sectarian overtones that could drag in regional powers.

"The Free Army hit the general staff building in Damascus' Umayyad Square and dozens were killed in the two powerful blasts," the information office for the FSA military council said in a statement. Syria's Information Minister Omran Zoabi had earlier said that the blasts caused only material damage.

Iran's Press TV also said Wednesday that one of its correspondents was killed in Syria covering the twin blasts and gun battles in the Damascus.

First couple offer glimpse of their marriage on 'The View'

The Obamas on "The View" (ABC)

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on "The View" on Tuesday, giving Americans a glimpse of the first couple's relationship.

"I told folks I'm supposed to be eye candy for you guys," President Obama, flanked by Michelle and the show's five female hosts, joked on the show, which was taped on Monday in New York ahead of his appearance at the United Nations general assembly.

Michelle Obama said she didn't realize that the first presidential debate is on the same date as their 20th wedding anniversary.

"I forgot," the first lady said.

"That's cold," President Obama said.

"I like lavishing her with all kinds of attention when she deserves it," President Obama said when asked how he is as a husband. "And she always deserves it."

The chat fest did eventually turn to more serious subjects, including the economy, Libya and President Obama's opponent in November.

"Would it be disastrous for the country if Mitt Romney were elected?" Barbara Walters asked the president.

"I think America is so strong, and we've got so much going for us that we can survive a lot," Obama responded. "But the American people don't want to just survive, we want everyone to thrive. We want folks to have a shot at success, and so the question then just becomes, whose policies are more likely to lead us to where we want to go?"

[Related: Obama: Libya attack 'wasn't just a mob action']

The president was also asked what his post-presidential plans are.

"Well, you know, first things first here," Obama quipped. "There's all kinds of things I want to do in the second term, uh, putting folks back to work, making sure our schools are up to snuff."

"And then?" Walters asked.

"You know, in a post-presidency, the thing that I think I would enjoy most is spending time working with kids," Obama said. "I love teaching, I miss teaching, and you know, I'm not sure it would necessarily be in a classroom, but the idea of being able to go around in various cities and helping to create mentorships, and apprenticeships, giving young people the sense of possibility and opportunity, and using whatever spotlight I can shine to show how much incredible talent there is out there."

As for Michelle, President Obama said "she should run for office, but she says she doesn't want to."

"I mean, Michelle would be terrific," he continued, "but temperamentally I just don't think [she could]."

"Yeah, no," the first lady said. "It takes a lot of patience to be the president of the United States, and I'm not that patient."

Investing Online

Investing online doesn?t come without risks, but if traders use a tried and true system, the chance of finding success increases. That?s why Absolute Wealth is making ?Trade the Banks? available; it?s giving beginning and advanced investors the ability to take on the markets with the confidence of a supremely proven program.

The sophisticated market indicators used by the ?Trade the Banks? program help investors peer into the inner workings of the biggest banks and financial institutions as they slide their millions of dollars into this stock or that one. The OVI scanner, the pride and joy of ?Trade the Banks? invaluable indicator and analysis software, shows the under the radar trades that banks make, providing a perfect format to copy with the promise of significant investment earnings.

Unfortunately, the stock markets are vulnerable to the smallest of details, and just about anything can disrupt its trends these days. An uncertain economic scenario, both domestically and abroad, is scaring some people away from the dream of investment prosperity.

A recent Business Report article proved that, claiming that US markets slipped thanks to trouble overseas. When far-off incidences affect the US markets so much, it turns trader?s moods sour and discourages the hope of ever finding investment success.

?US stocks were lower in early trade Wednesday after markets in Asia and Europe sank amid a rise in turmoil in the Eurozone,? the article reported. It also quoted an investment expert who said ?Some malevolent forces are rearing their ugly head again.?

Users of the ?Trade the Banks? system are able to avoid the worries of an unstable Eurozone, or any other common market affect. With the financial institutions and their triumphant moves being shown in black and white, the success can be found easily using ?Trade the Banks? and the OVI scanner.

?Trade the Banks? doesn?t use luck, prognostication, or fancy tricks to justify its suggestions. It uses the market?s status after it has already revealed itself, making the indicators the most valuable aspect of the program.

However, members will also receive exclusive access to the Private Tutorial Club, which features live, interactive webinars that provide personal contact with the creators and experts behind ?Trade the Banks.? Questions can be answered, strategies can be discussed, and hands can be held so that members get the most out of their online investing experience.

?Trade the Banks? is making average traders the kind of profits only experts would expect, and it?s no more difficult to use than an online shopping cart. Now that the program is being offered to the public, more and more investors are discovering the power of ?Trade the Banks? and reaping the benefits of its validated success. Demo Video: Safari Books Online's iPad App, Safari To Go for iPad ...

If you?re an iPad user, your Safari Books Online subscription just got super-sized. Our mobile app, Safari to Go, recently hit the App Store where you can download it for free.

Video Transcript

Hi, I?m Scott with Safari Books Online.

If you?re like me, you?re constantly getting up-date notices for your apps. Well, if you?re a Safari Books Online subscriber, and use the Safari to Go app for your iPad, this is one update you?ll want to jump on!

Okay, I promise I won?t keep you long, just long enough to zip through some of the enhancements.

Let?s say you?re in the middle of a book on your desktop, but you?ve got an appointment at the DMV, of all places. You grab your iPad and head out the door.

Even before you get there, all your folders, lists, Smart lists, have been refreshed in the cloud ? Safari To Go, opens up right where you left off. Skip the formality of a home page, and get right back to reading ? ?cause you?re going to be there a while!

Simplicity is the key to good design. See the simple, clean navigation bar on the left? It?s intuitive ? you won?t need to give it a second thought. In fact, I?m never going to mention it again!

Going somewhere without Internet access? You can download 3 books into your Offline Bookbag and read them later at 50,000 feet. Not 1 book, 3 complete books.

And Bookmarks have been reorganized. You?ll find them grouped by book, with the newest right on top.

What?s great here is that after you do a Search, you can save it (see, here it is in Folders), and, let?s say your Search netted 47 results. Come back in a month and that number will have grown. Any new additions to the collection that match will automatically populate when you activate the Search again.

I really want to show you the new Browser, which gives you a LOT more control. First, you can drill down by Category. From there, use the subcategories to refine your search even further. Plus, New and Popular.

Once you pinpoint what you?re looking for:

  • Tap the book, get the overview
  • Start reading 1 of 2 ways; from the beginning, or jump ahead to a specific section

From here, you can :

  • Add it to Favorites, which is also a shortcut to your Offline Bookbag
  • Or, write a review!

Speaking of reading. I saved some of the best for last!

Again, you?ve found your book ? before you dig in; take a few seconds to create a reader experience that?s more to your liking:

  • You can change the size of the type
  • You can change the font itself
  • If you flip your iPad to landscape you can view the text in columns
  • And, of course, there?s the great night reading option

Again, the reader navigation is simple and intuitive

Add the book to your list, or your Offline Bookbag

  • Tap the Table of Contents to jump elsewhere
  • And, when you get interrupted, and your iPad goes to sleep ? Recent will take you back to the spot where you left off ? which is exactly where we started our quick tour!

If you?re not already using the Safari Books Online iPad app, this is an awesome time to download Safari To Go ? for free ? from the Apple App Store.

No One Knows Why Google's Stock Is Soaring, But ... - Yahoo! Finance

Yesterday, Google's stock hit a new all-time high. It's up again this morning.

These moves cap an extraordinary run in which Google's stock has surged more than 30% since July, when it traded around $560.

So, what gives?

Why is Google flying?

I did an informal survey via Twitter yesterday, and here's what I heard back (combined with some of my own thoughts):

  • Motorola is proving to be less of a disaster than people expected (and Google is selling off some of the really crappy parts)
  • Everyone is realizing that Facebook isn't really a threat to Google's core business and that Facebook is not "the next Google."
  • The core business, search, is still growing like a weed.
  • Android, Google's mobile operating system, is the world leader, and it continues to gain market share at almost everyone's expense.
  • Android-based phones are finally as good as Apple phones, and Google's new tablet has also gotten rave reviews.
  • Founder and new CEO Larry Page has re-energized the company.
  • Stock-market investors are starved for "Growth At A Reasonable Price," and Google's stock provides that
  • Money is rotating out of Apple and into Google

Now, none of those reasons alone is enough to drive a big stock like this up 30%, but taken together, they're good news.

The real driver of Google's stock, of course, is the ongoing strength of the company's financial performance.

Five years ago, when Google's stock was on fire for the first time around, I suggested that it could eventually hit $2,000 a share. The "eventually" in that case was defined as "a couple of decades," which is a very long time period (and which actually wouldn't lead to a very compelling long-term return).

In sketching out that analysis, I made some back-of-the-envelope cash flow projections. Five years later, it's interesting to look back and see how things have progressed.

The most surprising thing about Google's performance over the last 5 years is that Google's cash flow is grown even faster than I thought it could. The stock's multiple has compressed, but Google's business has delivered more than most people expected it could, so the stock has done well despite the lower multiple.

In 2007, when Google first crossed $700, the company generated just over $3 billion in free cash flow.

This year, Google should generate at least $12 billion.

That's well ahead of where most people imagined they would be by now.

To put the $12 billion in context, it's more than twice Facebook's revenue (let alone cash flow).

It's also more than all but a handful of companies on earth. And it comes despite Google investing in a bizarre array of projects that have nothing to do with its core business, including self-driving cars and wind power.

So, here's to Google for putting up such extraordinary numbers.

Relative to the ~$12 billion of cash flow, the stock is now a bit pricey--~20X cash flow--but it's within the realm of reasonable.

Stock index futures signal early losses

PARIS (Reuters) - Stock index futures pointed to a lower open on Wall Street on Monday, with futures for the S&P 500 down 0.34 percent, Dow Jones futures down 0.3 percent and Nasdaq 100 futures down 0.18 percent at 5.02 a.m. EDT.

European shares and the euro followed a broad range of riskier assets lower on Monday as investors refocused attention from central bank stimulus schemes to weak economic fundamentals and a new range of risks in the euro zone's debt crisis.

German business sentiment dropped for a fifth successive month in September to its lowest level since early 2010, showing even the strongest of Europe's economies is succumbing to an economic downturn.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch sustained a loss of nearly $10 million on Friday due to an "operational error" in handling of stock option trades known as dividend trades by the company's Merrill Pro unit, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

Unionized workers at Ford Motor Co's Canadian operations have voted in favor of a four-year labor agreement with the company, the Canadian Auto Workers union and Ford said on Sunday.

Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group closed its Taiyuan plant in northern China on Monday after what the company called a "personal" dispute spiraled into a brawl involving 2,000 workers in a dormitory late on Sunday night, injuring 40. The Taiyuan plant, which employs about 79,000 workers, makes automobile electronic components, consumer electronic components and precision moldings. An employee told Reuters the plant also makes parts and assembles Apple's iPhone 5.

U.S. stocks closed flat on Friday even though investors welcomed Spain's efforts to seek a bailout and cheered Apple's newest iPhone that went on sale today, driving its shares to a record high.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> slipped 17.46 points, or 0.13 percent, to close at 13,579.47. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dipped just 0.11 of a point, or 0.01 percent, to finish at 1,460.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 4.00 points, or 0.13 percent, to close at 3,179.96.

The hurricane formed a day earlier in the eastern Pacific and at 5 a.m. EDT was centered about 415 miles (665 kms) south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.

The center says Miriam was moving northwest near 13 mph (20 kph). No coastal watches or warnings are in effect.

In the open Atlantic, Tropical Storm Nadine weakened somewhat early Monday while meandering far from land. It had sustained winds of about 50 mph (85 kph).

Mohali, September 22
The Department of Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats has started registering criminal cases against persons who have illegally acquired chunks of ?shamlat? (common) land in various villages across the state.

Balwinder Singh Multani, Director of the department, said at least 10 cases were registered under Section 13-A of the Punjab Village Common Land Act, 1961, by the Rural Development Department recently.

?There is a provision of serving a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment in such cases,? Multani said, adding that the department had prepared a list of several other persons who were in illegal possession of the common land.

The official said the department was determined on the issue and had already retrieved several acres of land under illegal possession.

Recently, a chunk of 719 acres of land in Patiala district was freed and restored to the respective panchayats, he added.

Multani admitted that over 1,283 ?kabza? (possession) warrants were yet to be executed.

?My first priority is to execute these warrants as early as possible and restore the encroached land to the respective panchayats,? said Multani.

?The results will come soon,? he assured.

Montana governor advocates for tuition freeze

HELENA, Mont. (AP) ? Term-limited Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer said Thursday his successors should use some of the state's $450 million surplus to freeze students' tuition ? a notion embraced by the Democrat in the race and less so by the Republican.

"Cash in the bank, grain in the bin, gives you options," Schweitzer said.

Schweitzer said Monday a freeze would keep education affordable. The next Legislature, along with the incoming governor, will be free to accept or reject the plan, which will be part of Schweitzer's budget proposal in November.

Republican former congressman Rick Hill said he plans to introduce new budget methods he argued will both save money and still allow tuition freezes. Democratic Attorney General Steve Bullock said he would seek the tuition freeze if elected.

Schweitzer said he reached a deal with higher education leaders to freeze tuition levels if the state provides an increase of $34 million in funding. The state Board of Regents is constitutionally granted autonomy over the details of the university budgets.

Universities are increasing tuition about 5 percent this year and next after they said the 2011 Legislature didn't provide enough to avoid the hikes. Tuition was frozen for four years prior to that.

Schweitzer's proposal would cover tuition for 2014 and 2015. Its fate is obviously very uncertain since it faces an election outcome, followed by the turmoil of a legislative session.

Schweitzer accused Republicans of cutting higher education and raising tuition for years prior to his first term that began in 2005.

Hill, who has advocated for a new style of budgeting he thinks will be more effective across state government, predicted the people he picks to run the university system will be able to save money and freeze tuition.

"I agree that we should have a freeze and hold the line on tuition," Hill said. "But we agree the way to get that done is to bring priority budgeting to the Board of Regents."

Hill said he would exert influence over the Board of Regents with the way he selects those to serve on the autonomous panel when vacancies come up.

In general, the Republican said he wants to spend more of the surplus on tax relief.

"I would expect to be an active member of the Board of Regents in advocating of the students, those are the ones who are the customers," Hill said.

Bullock said in a statement that he would unequivocally seek a tuition freeze, because "increases are, plain and simple, tax hikes on middle class Montanans."

"My top priority will be making sure the next generation has the opportunity to get a great education and a good-paying job here in Montana," Bullock said.
