Supreme Court on DOMA: Are they really going to rule? - ChicagoNow

By Nick Augustine, Wednesday at 1:16 am

It was recently reported that we are going to hear results this Friday regarding Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act appeals filed with the Supremes (that?s what many lawyers call the Supreme Court ? it?s somewhat comical because I always think of the singing group when people say that).

Every time I check the U.S. Supreme Court docket I see the same entry: ?DISTRIBUTED for Conference of [insert date] (now indicating) December 7, 2012. Apparently but unconfirmed by yours truly, the Supremes apparently agreed last Friday to consider Prop 8 and gay marriage. For more on the Defense of Marriage Act, the one defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

For more on the Act (better known as DOMA) see DOMA: Supreme Court has yet to hear cases on the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act

There are many lawyers writing on the issue of gay marriage rights. I want to know why our U.S. Supreme Court?s docket indicated the following (same post for the several cases):

?Oct 29 2012 DISTRIBUTED for Conference of November 20, 2012.
Nov 13 2012 DISTRIBUTED for Conference of November 30, 2012.
Dec 3 2012 DISTRIBUTED for Conference of December 7, 2012.?

The outcome of the Supreme Court's ruling on these cases will affect many people, regardless of their sexual orientation or marital status. The DOMA decision will affect family law attorneys, health care providers, and administrators in several additional service professions.

Hopefully there will be a decision on Prop 8 and the DOMA cases soon, possibly later this week.
